GILES S. WHITTEN IS DEAD
Near six o'clock, Tuesday evening last, Esquire Giles S. Whitten hung himself in an out house on the premises of his son-in-law, Mr. J. L. Grier, of this city. 'Squire Whitten was a charitable, upright and a strictly honest man. He was proud in spirit, generous in nature, kind in disposition, and had friends everywhere. Financial troubles weighed upon his mind- he had loaned money and could not collect it- he was tired of life, and expressed no fear at all of death. He bought the rope and quietly hung himself. He lived in an age of his own, for the companions of his earlier and happier days had passed from the stage of existence, and there was no charm on earth for him. Let no man pass harsh judgment upon the rash act of this aged man. Let the God who made him judge him, for no one else has a right so to do. In life he was good and kind to us- he was our friend, true and tried- and we lament his unfortunate and tragic death and drop a tear to his memory. Aged about 79 years.
